Running Through the Dark: solidarity in community and in sustainability.
The days are getting shorter, and the nights are creeping in faster than your average marathon runner chasing a PB. While some of us are packing away our summer running gear, others are gearing up for six months of questioning “why do I run at 6am in this weather” and trying to remember to charge your head torch.. We only advocate rechargeable batteries.
Safety First: because running should always be enjoyable.
Let's address the elephant in the room – or rather, the runner in the dark. Especially, I hate to say it for women. Speaking to many female friends this time of year becomes an ever circulating list of dreaded questions like "Are those footsteps getting closer?" or “where can I run that's got street lights”. Running becomes much less enjoyable and fulfilling for a third of our UK running community. For us males, here's your chance to be real allies (and yes, it's easier than hitting that sub-4 hour marathon):
- The Space Race: And we're not talking about NASA here. Creating space between yourself and female runners isn't just courteous – it's essential. Cross the road, take a breather, or pretend you've suddenly discovered a fascinating piece of pavement. Trust women when they say they’ll appreciate the gesture more than any "motivational" honking ever could.
- The Silent Support: Remember that scene in A Quiet Place where making noise was a bad idea? Apply that philosophy here. Your thoughts about womens running form/outfit/pace are best kept in that same place where you store your old, worn-out running shoes – out of sight.
- The Ripple Effect: Be the change you want to see in the running world. Talk to your male friends about this. Yes, even that one who thinks catcalling is a "compliment." (Spoiler alert: it's not.)
Community Spotlight: Lighting Up the Night Together 🌟
Events like "Light Up the Night" by Interval, Edinburgh's newest running store are doing more than just making runners look like running Christmas trees – they're shining a light (pun intended) on important issues. These women-focused events aren't just about running; they're about creating spaces where everyone can feel safe and supported. Plus, there's something magical about seeing a trail of head torches bobbing through the darkness like a constellation of determined stars.
Sustainable Strides: Because Mother Earth is Our Ultimate Running Track
Now, let's talk about that running wardrobe that's bursting at the seams (we've all been there). Whether you're:
- A seasoned runner with more layers than an onion
- A newbie wondering if two pairs of running tights is excessive (it's not in January north of Birmingham..!)
- Someone trying to balance quality with budget
Here's the truth: sustainable running gear doesn't always mean dropping half your monthly salary on a single base layer. It's about making mindful choices that benefit both your running journey and our planet.
Tips for Sustainable Running:
- Invest in quality pieces for high-wear items (sports bras, we're looking at you!)
- Consider second-hand gear for seasonal items
- Look for brands with solid environmental credentials - check out our webshop.
- Repair don't replace (unless we're talking about shoes – your knees will thank you)
Remember, whether you're powering through puddles in premium gear or rocking last season's sale finds, what matters most is that you're out there, moving, and part of this amazing community.
Final Thoughts: Winter running might seem daunting, but with the right mindset (and the right layers), it can be an incredible adventure. Stay safe, stay sustainable, and most importantly, stay connected to your running community. After all, we're all in this together – just preferably not too close together when running in the dark!
Want to make a difference? Share this with your running buddies, especially the ones who could use a gentle nudge in the right direction. Because sometimes, the best running achievements aren't measured in miles, but in the positive changes we create together.
Thank you for being curious
